#1. Only three countries worldwide, Mexico, Canada, and the U.S., witnessed the total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. #2. The April 8, 2024 eclipse became one of the most-viewed eclipses ever! With several large cities like San Antonio, Austin, and Dallas in Texas; Indianapolis in Indiana; Cincinnati in Columbus; Cleveland in Ohio; and Buffalo in New York all enjoying superb views of the eclipse, 2024 broke the record for the most people watching an eclipse live. #3. Solar eclipses have four types - Total, Annular, Hybrid, and Partial Eclipses. Total eclipses are the most desired, where complete darkness of the sun occurs. But only partial darkness occurs in other types of eclipses. #4. Earth is the only planet in our solar system where a perfect solar eclipse occurs! Sorry, mars lovers and our alien friends in Jupiter or Saturn. Our earth is the only planet where the moon and the sun align ideally to produce a perfect eclipse of complete darkness. #5. An eclipse lasts shorter than it takes you to have a bath! You can only view the beautiful total darkness phase of the eclipse for about four minutes. So make the best use of that short time to enjoy the experience! #6. The eclipse is the only time you can look directly at the sun without filters or sunglasses! When the moon covers the sun completely, looking up into the sky without your solar filter or glasses is safe. There is no other time you can try this without burning your eyes. #7. If you missed the 2024 eclipse, you will have to wait a while for your next chance! The next total solar eclipse in the U.S. is August 23, 2044, then a repeat in 2045, then another long wait till 2078. Solar eclipses are rare, so mark your calendar for the next one! #8. Long ago, people thought an eclipse was a sign that the gods were angry or something terrible was about to happen! So, the eclipse made our ancestors and great-grandparents very fearful, unlike now that we celebrate it and long to witness its beauty. #9. 'Eclipse' was derived from the Greek word 'ekleipsis', which means abandonment or downfall. Those historians could have chosen a nicer word. Still, they thought the eclipse was a bad omen, so they used a negative word on its naming day. #10. Our lovely Solar eclipses won't be around forever. In 600 million years, people won't be able to witness a total solar eclipse. This is because our moon would have moved far away from us, so it wouldn't be big enough to cover the entire sun during solar eclipses. #11. Total Solar Eclipse happens when the sun, moon, and earth are in syzygy! Yes, 'Syzygy' is an accurate word, even though it might look or sound like some made-up nonsense. It means the alignment of the sun, moon, and earth in a straight line formed by astronomers. #12. Texas got the first sight of the eclipse! In the U.S., Texas residents were the first to see the 2024 total eclipse before it passed to other states. Texans got to see it first! #13. Only 15 out of the 50 U.S. states witnessed the 2024 total solar eclipse. Unless you were in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, or Maine on April 8, 2024, you wouldn't have been able to see the total solar eclipse. #14. Not all parts of those 15 states got to see the total solar eclipse - for some states (like Tennessee and Kentucky), only a tiny part did! Even within those 15 states, only some parts experienced the complete darkness of the eclipse, while others didn't. Many people traveled with friends or family to one of the eclipse towns, cities, or states to experience the beauty of a total solar eclipse. #15. Over 30 million people can view the eclipse from their homes! These 30 million people are residents of the eclipse path, a term for places that can witness the total eclipse. If you're part of this group, you can walk outside from your home, look up, and see the total eclipse without traveling around. #16. Eclipse makes everywhere cooler! While the eclipse happens during the daytime, the darkness makes it feel like nighttime. Everywhere goes dark, and the sunlight goes off, which helps to drop the temperature by 10°F to 15°F. #17. Someone traveled across the world for 50 years to see 12 different eclipses! There is no greater eclipse lover than Canadian astronomer J.W. Campbell, who traveled to different countries across all the continents to see 12 eclipses in his lifetime. #18. Eclipse is the favorite moment for a marriage proposal! Most people propose to their partners during the total darkness of the eclipse. The beautiful darkness, cold breeze, and rarity of the eclipse make it the best moment for lovers. #19. On average, a total solar eclipse happens once every 360 years for any given location on earth. This means that if you only live in a particular town all your life, you might never witness a total solar eclipse even if you live till 300 years (which isn't possible anyway!). This April 8th eclipse might be the only eclipse you will experience in your lifetime, so cherish it! #20. A solar eclipse is only possible because of a fortunate coincidence and the number 400. The solar eclipse only happens because the sun is 400 times bigger than the moon and 400 times farther from the earth than the moon. So this coincidence makes both the sun and the moon appear the same size in the sky, making the eclipse possible (more physics lessons explain how this happens). #21. Eclipse makes the stars visible in the day! Have you ever seen the stars during that time? Of course, NO, you cannot! But the stars would shine brightly in the dark sky during the eclipse, making them clearly visible. #22. The oldest solar eclipse recorded was over 3,000 years ago! Around 1223 BC, that's 1223 years before the birth of Jesus or 3,247 years before now, some ancient astronomers recorded the solar eclipse events by writings and drawings on clay tablets. This happened in Syria. #23. Eclipse occurs in Saros cycles, each repeating every 18 years. #24. Eclipses do have shadows, but they move so fast that we humans rarely notice them. Scientists have measured the shadows of the eclipse to move at over 2,000 mph, which is four times faster than airplanes or ten times faster than the fastest sports cars! #25. Only one lucky town that saw the previous U.S. eclipse also saw the April 8, 2024 eclipse. That lucky town is Carbondale in Illinois! #26. The famous explorer Christopher Columbus was saved by an eclipse when he was stranded in Jamaica during one of his trips. During the eclipse, Christopher Columbus tricked his capturers by threatening not to release the moon if they didn't release him and his men and supplied them with more food. And his trick worked! #27. The Chinese word for a solar eclipse is 'Shih,' which means 'to eat.' This is because, in the olden days, Chinese people believed the heavenly dog ate up the sun during every solar eclipse. #28. Some other planets in our solar system enjoy double or triple eclipse! This happens in Jupiter, Saturn, or Neptune, which have multiple moons. Up to three moons can align straight between the sun and the planet to create a triple eclipse. Unfortunately, our earth has only one moon, so we can't have a double or triple eclipse. #29. The first place to see the 2024 eclipse in the U.S. was the Mexican border of Las Quintas Fronterizas in Texas at 2:27 ET. #30. The last place to see the 2024 eclipse in the U.S. was Littleton in Maine at 3:35 p.m. ET. #31. A solar eclipse only happens at the New Moon, when the moon is on the same side of the earth as the sun. #32. Before 2024, no person six years old or younger in the U.S. had ever seen a total solar eclipse. If you were born after August 21, 2017, April 8, 2024 was likely your first solar eclipse experience. #33. The North and South Poles are the only places without a total solar eclipse. #34. Winds slow down during solar eclipse, and you can even feel its reduced speed throughout the eclipse. #35. It can take up to one hour before full daylight is restored after a total solar eclipse - just like it did after the April 8, 2024 eclipse. #36. Across the world, partial or annular solar eclipses occur at least twice and at most five times a year. But a Total solar eclipse only occurs somewhere on earth every 18 months. #37. The eclipse path and locations where you can see the eclipse keep changing worldwide, so every country gets to witness at least one total solar eclipse within 400 years. The bigger the country, the more frequent it can see these eclipses. That explains why big countries like the U.S. can witness total solar eclipse every 20 years but in different states. While in smaller countries like San Marino, they only get to see one every 300 to 400 years. #38. People from Southwestern Texas witnessed the longest duration of the 2024 total solar eclipse in the U.S., at 4 minutes and 27 seconds - no other place in the U.S. saw the absolute darkness of the sun for that long. #39. People from the east coast of Maine witnessed the 2024 total solar eclipse for the shortest time, only 3 minutes and 22 seconds - everywhere else in the U.S. saw the sun's absolute darkness for longer. #40.
